Patients who change their treatment choice

We recommend that patients who are candidates for breast cancer surgery visit the Center for Shared Decision Making. It is a free service for our patients with many tools and decision aids to help patients make decisions about their health and health care.

For patients diagnosed with early stage invasive breast cancer, we have a video that includes information to help you understand how cancer grows in the breast and how it is treated, what to expect with each surgical treatment, a comparison of treatments, and questions to keep in mind. The video can help patients decide which treatment is right for them.

Some women with early stage invasive breast cancer are participating in a study. We ask these patients to fill out a short questionnaire before and after watching the video and after the consult with their cancer surgeon. After watching the video and talking with their surgeon, 20% of patients changed their treatment choice.
