If you are unable to attend one of these meetings, you can take an online colonoscopy information session.

In the colonoscopy information session we discuss:

  • Screening options
  • Insurance coverage
  • Referral requirements
  • Bowel prep
  • Medications
  • Potential risks and complications

The program lasts about one hour. Nurses from the Department of Surgery and the Gastroenterology Department will explain in detail what you will have to do before the procedure. The nurses will also help you select a provider, date, and a time for the procedure.

We have been told that our patients are the best prepared for a colonoscopy because they understand what they are buying, and have a detailed written document to follow.

About colonoscopies

The recommended age for starting colon screening is 50 unless you have a first degree relative (parent/sibling/child) who has had colon cancer. The screening colonoscopy then needs to start 10 years earlier for you than the age of diagnosis of the relative.

What patients say

"Being there with the health care providers helped me ask questions and also hear questions posed by others I would not have thought of until after I got home if not at all. It was just great!"

"Excellent-just the right amount of seriousness- lightened up with a bit of humor."

"I felt the in-person contact was worth the trip, seeing the scope, and hearing others’ questions."

"The meeting was good for me so I could reflect on what was going to happen and what the risks are."
