Gastric Banding Surgery
Image above showing one example of a gastric banding device used at Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Gastric banding reduces the size of the stomach with an adjustable silicone band. With this procedure, a silicone band is placed, laparoscopically, around the top of the stomach. This creates a small "pouch" which limits the amount of food that can be consumed. The device can be removed entirely if necessary.
Weight loss is slower with banding, and overall, significantly less than gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.Gastric banding is associated with a higher long-term complication and re-operative rate. The volume of gastric banding surgeries in Europe and the United States has declined due to these concerns.
